Perfume de Gardenias Community Screening & Panel

Join us for a free film screening under the stars on *October 19th at 6:00 PM EST. We invite you to a s special outdoor screening and discussion of Macha Colón’s Perfume de Gardenias, presented in collaboration with PHLAFF.

The film follows an elderly Puerto Rican woman, Isabel, who finds solace in designing idiosyncratic funerals in the “muerto parado” or “standing funeral” tradition following the death of her husband. With each deceased, her creativity blossoms, incorporating details from their life stories to celebrate them in their funeral rites.

Perfume de Gardenias is a Caribbean story on the universal theme of death in a film created by a mostly female production team. The film's visuals, which include colorful and unusual installations - funerals, have been worked in an unconventional way by a team of artists from different art disciplines. This film pays homage to all the mothers who care for Puerto Rican families. The project, a co-production with Colombia, is conceived as an inter-multidisciplinary artistic proposal (including other performative components) as is the work of its writer and director, Macha Colón.

The screening will take place at Taller Puertorriqueño — 2600 N. 5th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19133. Learn more about the event and Taller Puertorriqueño on their website.

Following the screening attendees will have the chance to take part in a panel discussion featuring the director, Macha Colón. The community is invited to reflect on their experiences of individual and collective grief as it relates to the film and its themes. Let’s connect, reflect, and heal through the art of storytelling.

*The rain date for the screening will be October 20th at 6 PM EST.
